How long does a bearded dragon live?
That seems to have changed a little over time as we become more and more educated about the Pogona Vitticeps (Bearded Dragon).  The oldest
bearded dragon in captivity is 15 years old and he is still living!  The average lifespan of a captive bearded dragon is approximately 10 years.  With good
husbandry there is no reason we couldn’t shatter the records in the future and have these incredible creatures for years and years to come!

I just got my bearded dragon and he won’t eat, what’s wrong?
This is completely normal.  Most bearded dragons will not eat at least for a few days when they move to a new home.  Continue to offer him greens and
his crickets and eventually he will come around.  This process is called
acclimation.  He is scared and unsure of his new surroundings.  Until he is
somewhat settled he may not eat. (See our
acclimation page)

Is it better to buy more than one bearded dragon?  Won’t my dragon get lonely?
In the wild, Bearded Dragons tend to be a solitary creature.  In the wild they do not live in groups or even stay with their siblings.  In my personal
experience I have had female “groups” living together with no problems.  As for getting lonely… I think they are fine and don’t get lonely especially if you
handle and spend time with your dragon!

Do only males blacken and/or flair out their beards?
Absolutely not.  This seems to be a common misconception.  Both males and females blacken and flair out their beards.  Blackening tends to be more
common with males, especially during mating season but both sexes are capable and do flair out their beards.

What is brumation? Will my bearded dragon brumate?  When?
Brumation is a semi-hibernation state in which a reptile sleeps the majority of the time, and eats very little.  Most bearded dragons don’t start brumating
until they are at least 1 ½ years old.  Not every dragon brumates.  Some actually choose not to or don’t have the desire to.  Every dragon brumates
differently.  Some brumate very deeply, some brumate lightly. (see our
Brumation page)

Can you make a bearded dragon a vegetarian?
NO, you cannot!  Many people have tried this and it can result in very sad circumstances.  Bearded Dragons (especially in the first year) require a great
deal of protein.  They need this to grow!  Once they reach about a year and a half their desire & need for proteins tapers off somewhat and they become
about 75% - 80% vegetarian.  See our
Nutritional Chart for a wide variety of things to eat and not to eat for your Dragon.

Why is UV lighting required?  Is it important?
UVA & UVB is used for promoting regular habits in reptiles such as eating, breeding etc.  UVB also helps synthesis of vitamin D3 and calcium.  It is crucial
that your bearded dragon has an approved UV source otherwise disasters will unfold such as MBD (metabolic bone disorder) & many other things and
possibly death.

Do I need to cut my dragons nails?
Avoid doing this unless absolutely necessary.  Your enclosure(s) should have at least 1 rock in it - this should indeed help with keeping your dragons nails
in check.  Your dragons nails
will over grow if they don't have a rock in their cage to act like an emery board.
